Why It Matters
"The fastest way to learn anything is to learn it from someone who is currently doing it at the highest level."

Online courses can teach you a framework. Textbooks can give you theory. But neither can tell you which tools an interviewer will actually test you on next Thursday, or which architectural decision your team lead is going to push back on in your first code review.

Atlia mentors bring the knowledge that can't be Googled — the unwritten standards, the real hiring bar, the shortcuts that only come from years of experience on engineering teams at the world's best technology companies.

Every Atlia mentor is actively employed as a senior practitioner. Not a career educator. Not a retired professional. Someone who wrote production code, led a real deployment, or made a consequential architectural decision this week — and is now sharing what they know with the next generation.

🎯
Learn What's Actually Used in Production
Not last year's curriculum. Not theoretical best practices. The tools, patterns, and techniques your mentor used in a real job this week.
🔗
Access Networks You Can't Buy
Your mentor's professional network is a path to opportunities that never appear on job boards. Many Atlia placements begin with a mentor introduction.
🧭
Navigate the Unwritten Rules
Every company and every discipline has unwritten norms — how to negotiate, when to push back, what gets you promoted. Mentors teach what no course covers.
📋
Feedback That Mirrors the Real Hiring Bar
Your mentor has hired — or been on the panel for — roles at their company. Their feedback reflects the actual standard, not a textbook rubric.

Beyond the Curriculum

Five Ways Your Mentor Shapes Your Career

Mentorship at Atlia goes far beyond weekly sessions. Here's what you get access to throughout your program.

🧭
01
Career Guidance
Your mentor helps you identify the right target roles, which companies to prioritise, and how to position your background for maximum impact in the US and UK job market.
🔬
02
Project Reviews
Every project you submit is reviewed by your mentor — not an algorithm. You receive detailed, contextual feedback that mirrors what a senior engineer on a hiring panel would say.
📡
03
Industry Insights
Live updates on what's changing in your domain — new tools gaining adoption, teams that are growing, interview formats shifting, salary bands expanding. Knowledge you can't get from a course.
📁
04
Portfolio Feedback
Before you start applying, your mentor reviews your GitHub, portfolio site, and LinkedIn profile with the same critical eye they'd use when evaluating candidates on their own team.
🎯
05
Interview Preparation
3 to 6 full mock technical interviews conducted by your mentor using real question formats from their company. Feedback on both technical depth and communication style.
The Journey

Mentor Involvement at Every Stage

Your mentor doesn't appear at the start and disappear after week two. They're embedded in every phase of your program.

🤝
Week 1 — Orientation & Goal Setting
Your mentor meets you in a 1-on-1 session during the first week. They review your background, your goals, and co-create the specific career outcome you're targeting together.
1-on-1 session · 45 minutes
📚
Weeks 2–8 — Core Curriculum
Live weekend sessions covering the core curriculum. Your mentor runs each session, assigns projects, and reviews every submission with written feedback before the next class.
Weekly sessions · Project reviews
🏗️
Weeks 9–12 — Specialisation Deep-Dive
You choose your specialisation track. Your mentor guides you through more advanced content and oversees your capstone project — reviewing drafts and challenging your technical decisions.
Capstone project · Advanced mentorship
💼
Final Weeks — Career Sprint
Your mentor reviews your portfolio, LinkedIn, and resume. Conducts 3–6 mock technical interviews, gives written feedback, and — where appropriate — makes direct referrals within their network.
Mock interviews · Portfolio review · Referrals
🏆
Post-Graduation — Until You're Hired
Mentor engagement doesn't end at graduation. Your career team and mentor stay active, adjusting your interview strategy based on live feedback until you accept an offer.

The Mentor Experience in Their Own Words

Testimonials from Atlia graduates — specifically about what their mentor relationship meant to their career outcome.

★★★★★

"James reviewed my capstone project at 11pm on a Thursday with a 3-paragraph writeup that was more valuable than anything I'd read in six months of self-study. That level of care — from a Google DeepMind engineer — is something I still can't quite believe I had access to."

FAQ

Questions About Working with Mentors

Significant. Every live weekend session is run by your assigned mentor. They review and provide written feedback on every project you submit. You have access to weekly office hour slots (30 minutes, bookable on-demand). For PGP learners, this also includes a dedicated 1-on-1 session at the start of the programme and 1-on-1 check-ins at each major milestone. Your mentor is available on your cohort Slack channel throughout the week for async questions.
Yes. You are assigned a primary mentor at enrolment and they stay with your cohort for the full programme duration. In rare cases where a mentor has an unavoidable schedule conflict, a qualified substitute mentor from the same domain covers the session — and your primary mentor reviews the session recording and catches up with your cohort directly afterwards. We do not rotate mentors across sessions.
We take this seriously. Speak to your programme manager within the first three weeks. We will assess the situation and, if appropriate, facilitate a mentor change. This is rare — we invest significant effort in matching mentors to cohort profiles during the pre-programme intake process. But we will never leave a learner stuck in a poor fit for the length of a 9 or 12-month programme.
Yes, through your cohort's dedicated Slack channel where your mentor is active throughout the week — typically responding to async questions within 24 hours on weekdays. Weekly optional office hour slots are bookable on-demand for more in-depth discussions. Mentors are active practitioners with full-time roles, so direct availability is structured — but they are genuinely engaged and responsive, not passive figureheads.
Mentors make introductions at their own professional discretion — we do not require or guarantee this. However, it does happen regularly for learners who have demonstrated strong work throughout the programme. Several Atlia graduates have received direct introductions from their mentors to hiring managers at Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and other companies where mentors work or have networks. We do not manufacture this — we create the conditions where it naturally follows from genuine performance.
Every mentor goes through a three-stage selection process: (1) a credentials review confirming current active employment in a senior role at a qualifying company, (2) a technical assessment conducted by our curriculum review board to validate domain depth, and (3) a teaching assessment where they deliver a sample session to a panel of our academic advisors and former learners. We accept fewer than 15% of mentor applicants. We also conduct quarterly reviews — mentors who receive consistently low feedback ratings are not retained.
Both. Mentors are the primary instructors for live sessions — they design, run, and evolve the curriculum content for their domain in collaboration with our academic team. They also review and grade all project submissions with detailed written feedback. The distinction at Atlia is that the person teaching the content and the person reviewing your work are the same senior practitioner — not a teacher supported by a separate, junior grading team.
Live sessions are scheduled to accommodate both US Eastern Time and UK GMT/BST, typically between 10am–2pm ET / 3pm–7pm GMT on weekends. Cohorts are grouped by time zone preference at enrolment. All sessions are recorded and available within 24 hours for learners who cannot attend live — though attendance is strongly encouraged given the interactive, question-driven format.
